ARTIFICIAL SNOW PRODUCTION

Key factors affecting quality of artificial snow are as follows:

  • Air and water temperature,
  • Air humidity,
  • Artificial snow system specific characteristics.

Production and quality of artificial snow could be substantially improved due to water cooling. In addition, incline corner of down slope plays important role here: the steeper the slope, the further fractions are dispersed; therefore, snow coating on the slope will be of higher quality.

AMOUNT OF WATER NECESSARY FOR SNOW COATING OF 1 SQUARE METER

On average the starting level of snow coating on the slope is equal to 0.29 – 0.30 meters at air temperature of 4 - 6˚С, water temperature of +4˚С. At such parameters, 0.45c.m. of water and 0,388kWh of energy are needed for snow coating on one square meter of slope.

OPTIMAL TEMPERATURE

In this case it may be said about air temperature, at which artificial snow coating is technically possible. The key is FKT index, which depends on humidity and temperature of air. Quantity and quality of produced artificial snow directly depends on air and water temperature, water pressure etc. Therefore, not only air temperature is affecting factors in this process.

Using Lenko equipment FKT index could be from – 1.5˚С to - 13˚С.

at FKT: - 13˚С the equipment will operate with the greatest effectiveness, but even if the temperature falls below, the guns will continue to produce high quality artificial snow.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF GUN CHARACTERISTICS

Propeller snow guns

  • Propeller snow gun productivity is 5 times greater than that of mast one;
  • Possibility to direct snow flow even under strong wind;
  • High flight range of snow;
  • High quality of snow at water pressure of 8 – 35bars;
  • Equipment operates under water head: from 11 to 660 liters per second;
  • Automatic regulation of snow quality;
  • High productivity at – 6 - 7˚С.

Mast guns

  • For operation at windless area / weather;
  • At high pressure of water (30 - 40Bar);
  • At average width of slopes;
  • Easy transportation;
  • For «soft snow coating»;
  • For slopes where snow coat is needed to be renewed often.

Mast guns are convenient and suitable for slopes, where necessity in produced snow quantity is not big and where there is a need to save water and electric energy.

RECOMMENDED THICKNESS OF SNOW COAT

Starting thickness of snow coat should be about 30cm. this indicator is affected by: equipment productivity, slope specifics, sunlight, and wind speed.

ARTIFICAIL SNOW QUALITY INDICATORS

Snow quality is interesting and controversial questions. Snow weight (for instance: 400 – 450kg/m) represents weight of water in snow, in addition, important characteristics are level of density and crystals structure. Snow weight is not the only indicator of its quality.

The most important indicators of artificial coating quality are as follows:

  1. High resistance against melting;
  2. Snow, which is not rolling down from the slope at tobogganing;
  3. Minimal usage of energy at snow production.

«Lenko» Company is trying to achieve maximum effectiveness of the equipment. Snow guns Lenko produce high quality snow at water head of 8 – 35 bars. Therefore, there is no necessity for Lenko equipment operation to install a powerful pump which means cost saving on acquisition of high pressure pumps and pipes. Energy is saved and snow production becomes cost efficient.

For high quality snow coating of a slope flight range of fractions plays an important role due to the following:

  1. Freezing of drops is continued even during the flight of fractions in air;
  2. Necessary humidity level snow production is possible;
  3. Guns can operate at dry air;
  4. First snow will be «soft».

TIME FOR PRIMARY «SNOW COATING»

Time for snow coating depends on quantity of used equipment: the more snow guns are used, the quicker snow coating of a slope.

Time from 100 to 140 hours is needed, but we have in the first place always needs and opportunities of our clients, thus number of hours can be reduced.

TIME FOR SNOW PRODUCTION

There is dependence between artificial snow production time and air temperature. Time can be used efficiently at exploitation of autonomic snow production systems. Productivity of automatic systems is 30% higher than hand-operated ones (on big areas of 20 – 25 hectares). Depreciation of big costs takes place quicker due to high effectiveness of production. In addition, fully automated system guarantees permanent high quality of snow.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

  1. Starting size of drop is 100mk;
  2. Small cooled drops are connected with big drops;
  3. Drops acquire their final size, water cooling with minimal evaporation;
  4. Derived fractions are merged and frozen;
  5. Snow distribution happens without water addition.

All snow guns Lenko produce fully frozen fractions at all temperatures which is more important than the size of fractions. Less time on freezing is spent since this process is continued in air.

Snow generators LENKO Northwind – hand-operated machines, convenient in usage and servicing. They produce high quality snow and operate well at temperatures close to zero. Snow formation is possible at temperatures from – 0.5˚С to – 30˚С. 

AUTOMATIC SNOW GENERATORS «RA-450» AND «RA-620»

Automatic guns have a range of advantages compared to hand-operated models. They can be hand-operated as well. Every gun has a temperature sensor of surrounding air, water temperature and humidity.

ADVANTAGES OF GUNS-ROBOTS:

  1. at temperatures close to zero there is no need every time to «catch» a moment when temperature is down to -1˚С. For start of snow formation it is only needed to switch a gun on in a Standby mode. When air temperature is sufficient to start operation the sensor will give a signal for flaps opening and gun itself will start produce snow. Since in our climate air temperature can several times change during a day this option of self switching on at sufficient for snow formation weather conditions becomes very important.
  2. Same with further operation – there is no need to look after air temperature fall down for opening of ne collector – the gun itself will open necessary ring.
  3. Since automatic gun itself opens and closes sprayer rings depending on air temperature there is no need for permanent presence of operator around it – for the head of ski centre it represents man power cost saving.
  4.  Also important function of automatic gun is automatic closure of water post (self-drainage) at emergency shutoff of energy.
    ARTIFICIAL SNOW COATING SYSTEM
    For opening of ski season one month earlier and close 2 – 3 weeks later, not to depend on weather conditions, and also to provide stable snow coat at higher loads from commercial skiing and sports events, artificial snow systems («snow coating» systems) are applied.

«Snow coating» system is a complex of engineering facilities and applications including:

1. Cooling stack reservoir

2. Water-diverting structure with filtration.

3. Pump stations with electronic equipment.

4. Pipeline with hydranths.

5. High pressure hoses.
